How Can I Successfully “Resist the Devil”?

Resisting the evil and submit under GodSermon Summary: The bible tells us to resist the devil. Fine, but what does that actually mean? Some Christians erroneously think that determination and will power will suffice. Others shout at the devil, but with predictably discouraging results. Still others invoke “formulas” that they know in their heads but don’t truly believe in their hearts. To gain the ability to resist the devil successfully will require much of you, but the results will be dramatic!

Smith WigglesworthBorn in 1859 into poverty, Smith Wigglesworth was converted by the Methodists at eight years of age. Even then, he was hungry for God and hungry for souls.

Smith Wigglesworth was without doubt one of the most anointed men of God that has lived in recent times. He was known as the Apostle of Faith, and if anyone deserved to be described as "full of faith and of the Holy Ghost", it was him.

He lived and walked continually in the presence of God. And the miracles that accompanied his ministry were of the sort that have seldom been seen since the days of the apostles. People born blind and deaf, cripples - twisted and deformed by disease, others on death's door with cancer or sickness of every kind,- all were healed by the mighty power of God. Even the dead were raised.

Bible Reading Acts 6

In the days when the number of disciples began to be multiplied there developed a situation which caused the twelve to make a definite decision not to occupy themselves with serving tables, but to give themselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the Word. How important it is for all God's ministers to be continually in prayer, and constantly feeding on the Scriptures of Truth. I often offer a reward to anyone who can catch me anywhere without my Bible or my Testament.

None of you can be strong in God unless you are diligently and constantly hearkening to what God has to say to you through His Word.

You cannot know the power and the nature of God unless you partake of His inbreathed Word.

Read it at morn and at night, and at every opportunity you get. After every meal, instead of indulging in unprofitable conversation round the table, read a chapter from the Word and then have a season of prayer. I endeavor to make a point of doing this no matter where or with whom I am staying.

Large Church or Small

I would like to share an experience with you and I am still trying to sort out in my mind.

John with the family dog
John with the family dog

Some background:
I have attended church all my young life, thanks to my mother.  In fact, it was a Sunday morning on the way to church, that she went to the hospital to give birth.  I was raised in a small Baptist church in the heartland of America.  I believe I was 8 years old when I thought it was the right thing to do to answer the alter call and get baptized. I remember making the decision.  The only detail I remember was it was the right thing to do.  I cannot now remember if Jesus or his acceptance had anything to do with it.

The Price Of Pastoral Leadership

Look to Jesus as your true pastor
Look to Jesus as your true Pastor

We all know the blessings of being in pastoral ministry – the blessing of knowing that your life is spent for the gospel, using your gifts, meeting wonderful people, receiving people’s encouragement, and seeing changed lives. We can’t achieve these things, though without paying a price.

Who do we look like?

Baptism of Jesus
Do we have the character like Jesus

I am shure you have been looking at some baby, trying to see whether the baby look more like the father or the mother. This image caused me to ponder about the characteristics others see when they are looking at us. It left me wondering if our neighbours and friends see the resemblance to our Creator when they look at us. Do we look like our heavenly Father? Does our countenance reflect the image of His holiness?

God, today we come to You, asking that You will help us to reflect You in all we say and do, so that others will see You in us.

Creative Bible Study

Creative Bible Study Methods

This course is short and to the point. If approached prayerfully it will provide you with a solid foundation from which you can and will be made use of by the Holy Spirit in spreading the Gospel to the unsaved around you.

Harvestime International Institute

The very existence of Harvestime International Institute is founded upon equipping you and those like you with the tools needed to spread the Gospel. After finishing this course you will be available to the Holy Spirit to teach the message that Jesus taught. This means that the message you are spreading, will be powerful, and will be overwhelmingly meaningful and relevant to the unsaved ones around you.

Message that was originally delivered by Jesus

One problem that is encountered in witnessing, the message many individuals get is not the message that was originally delivered by Jesus. Many of the messengers of these messages are well meaning, but wrong. This course will direct your feet down the path of absolute truth.

Truth is truth. Truth is what God Spoke through Jesus and truth is what you must speak. This then, is the foundation and purpose of this course. This course has an overriding purpose:

  • Your understanding God’s word.

Guidance of the Holy Spirit

The method of this course is the Guidance of the Holy Spirit. After the Holy Spirit, another indispensable piece of equipment for this course is the Bible. You the student will need constant prayerful guidance. You will be participating in much prayer during this course.

When Bible study is approached in this way, organized, guided by the Spirit, and thoughtful, your maturity in the faith will grow. This is precisely why the course is organized in this way.

You will know how to study God’s word

At the end of this course you will know how to study God’s word, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, for yourself and not depending on the interpretation supplied by others. When done in a prayerful manner the Bible will become to you, the written word of God. The best commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself. The answer the questions about the Bible are contained in the Bible. During this course you will find yourself in making and organizing outlines, using and making notes for later study. Finally you will find yourself learning the use of charts. Charting of what is written reduces the chance of misunderstanding of what was actually the intent of the author intended meaning.

Foundations Of Faith

It is extremely important to know the foundation of the belief system or of any set of rules and beliefs you hold in your life. This study will introduce you to the basic doctrines that Jesus brought to mankind.

When the foundations are fully understood, spiritual maturity can be achieved.

All of us, without exception, are completely ill equipped and ill fitted to make a journey on the path that leads to Salvation. Someone must somehow introduce you to the teachings of Jesus and their full meanings. In this case that someone is you.

Your responsibility

This course will introduce you to your responsibility to the new believer just starting down this path. You are responsible to lead, guide and move the new convert down the path for service to God and into the heart of the church. You have/will become the personal caretaker for the newly born again Christian.

This course outlines 5 steps the caretaker of the new Christian should take to insure spiritual growth and maturity in the spiritual world. These steps are time tested and authentic in their application. They should be studied diligently and playfully for guidance from the Holy Spirit.

The right tools

The final goal in being an caretaker of the newly won person in Christ is to place such a person in a position and having the right tools in hand, to be able to go out into society and help others on their journey.

You will be given a glance of the overview of history of that time period. You will have at your hand a outline for each book in the Old Testament for study now and reference later when you are in the battlefield for Christ.

Tools for Your Use

You will benefit from knowing who wrote each book and with what the purpose in mind the author wrote the book for. Each book was written as a response to something happening to the people in real time history. You’re seeing God working throughout history in self revelation with cause you to more growth and maturity.
